Teeth can become sensitive for several reasons, the most common of which are enamel that has worn away or roots of the teeth that are exposed. Other causes of tooth sensitivity include, but are not limited to, a lesion, a split or fractured tooth, an aged filling, or periodontitis. A toothache may be caused by any of these disorders.
Sensitivity may be a sign of deterioration of the nerve inside the tooth. Sensitivity to high temperatures is one of the warning signs of an infected tooth, and the longer it lasts, the worse it is for the nerve. This is a common sign of nerves that are about to die.
Desensitizing toothpaste, when applied multiple times, can reduce or eliminate the pain caused by teeth that are sensitive. Over-the-counter sales of products include many different brands and varieties.
In addition, your teeth’s enamel may be strengthened and discomfort reduced by applying fluoride to the most sensitive places. Additionally, the dentist may propose that you use prescription fluoride in the comfort of your own home, applying it with a special tray.
Brush your teeth twice daily using toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Once every day, floss your teeth thoroughly. Flossing will help prevent future occurrences of tooth sensitivity. Instead of aggressive or rough cleaning, use delicate strokes and avoid toothpaste that is too abrasive to use.
