Dental exams are provided to all of our patients following their routine dental cleaning procedure, which you should have done every six months. These exams are essential in protecting your long-term dental health because our dentists know what to look for and will notice issues that you would not see on your own. During exams at Joshua M. Ignatowicz DMD & Associates, our dentist will check your oral alignment and development, ensure that your teeth have been properly cleaned, and monitor for any oral health concerns.

Why Dental Exams Are Essential

You know that you need to brush and floss your teeth daily. However, having a routine dental exam takes your oral health a step further and gives you a chance to discuss any concerns you may have with a dental professional. Our exams provide more thorough care than you can give to yourself at home. Our dentists have special training and are able to examine your mouth more thoroughly as well. People cannot see every part of their mouth clearly when they look in the mirror, so it is important to have a professional check for any oral health concerns.

Routine Dental Cleaning

Dental exams are provided immediately following routine dental cleanings, at which time our dental hygienists remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and gumline. Our hygienists first use a scaler to remove this debris before finishing your cleaning with brushing and flossing. During your exam, our dentist may also provide some light cleaning in case any plaque or tartar has been missed by our dental hygienist.

Dental X-Rays

Dental x-rays are not required at any exam, but our patients typically have these done at least once a year. This will depend on various factors, such as insurance coverage and your medical history. Our dentist will explain this to you in more detail during your exam. X-rays allow our dental professionals to check for proper alignment and development, since they show the entire image of the teeth and jaw. This also shows any underlying injury or disease that would need to be treated. You will be given a protective covering for your neck and chest to prevent any extra radiation from the x-ray machine. You will bite onto a small piece of plastic that is used to both stabilize your mouth and focus the x-ray machine. X-rays only take a few seconds so you will not need to hold this in your mouth for long.

Dental Examination By Our Dentist

Once the x-rays have been taken, our dentist will check them and discuss the results with you. They will let you know whether or not the x-rays looked normal and about any follow-up treatment or testing that is needed. Our dentist will examine your mouth to check for plaque and tartar. They will also check your bite using a colored piece of paper. This lets us check for proper alignment and bite force distribution. To conclude your dental exam, our dentist will examine your mouth for any signs of oral cancer. Our dentist will give you some general oral hygiene advice and your appointment will be complete.
