All About Braces
Woman smiling with Braces from Joshua M. Ignatowicz DMD & Associates in Henderson, NVTraditional braces have an advantage over other alignment treatments, as they are the most effective at straightening teeth. What is meant by this is that they can tackle the most extreme cases of teeth misalignment, where other braces and retainers cannot, and they give the orthodontist the most amount of control over your treatment. Minute changes can be made to the braces throughout the treatment, to increase their effectiveness.

After the treatment, the straightening of your teeth can give permanent benefits to the patient. It can alleviate any pain that was caused by an overbite, underbite, cross bite, tooth protrusion, tooth grinding (bruxism) and more. Braces also prevent further damage that can impact teeth that are at awkward angles, such as chipping or cracking. It also makes brushing easier, which reduces a patient’s risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

Types of Treatment

Traditional braces used to be impactful on self-esteem and confidence. But these days, we can use a minimal amount of wires and brackets to help prevent any changes in aesthetics. Treatment time is often faster than it used to be, so the braces are on for less time. The wires and brackets work to pull the teeth into place, after the appliance is tightened by one of our orthodontists. Regular appointments allow adjustments to maintain the treatment.

Retainers are another form of teeth alignment, and are often preferred to braces. Retainers come in a number of different forms, including the widely popular Invisalign®.

There are many different forms of orthodontic treatment, so it is best to talk to one of our specialists to get the information on what treatments could benefit you. Treatment can take an average of 12-18 months and has the potential to remove discomfort permanently.

Taking Care of Your Braces

Braces are typically worn for one to three years, which may seem like a long time, but you should experience the benefits for the rest of your life. The traditional braces treatment has changed over the years, and may be different than what you remember. The brackets are much smaller and clearer looking, making them less distinguishable than before. The use of color on the brackets appeals to children, as it allows them to become more comfortable with the idea of wearing them.

It is important to take care of your braces, as you will have to avoid some foods until the treatment has finished. Hard foods such as an apple, or chewy foods like chewing gum, cannot be consumed while braces are fitted, as they can get stuck in your braces or damage them.

Brushing and flossing properly can be difficult with braces, as it’s harder to get in between the brackets and under the wires. Our orthodontists can help advise you on the best techniques, and can recommend special toothbrushes if needed.

Keeping your regular orthodontist appointments will ensure that the treatment stays on target, and any adjustments can be made if need be. It is advisable to tell our orthodontist if you’re feeling any pain from the braces, as they will be able to amend it.
