How Kidney Disease and Oral Health Are Linked

Posted on 4/12/2021 by Joshua M. Ignatowicz DMD & Associates
How Kidney Disease and Oral Health Are LinkedProper dental care is important for everyone, but it is especially important for those suffering from kidney disease. This is because there is a two-way link between dental problems like periodontitis and chronic kidney disease. Not only does kidney disease increase the risk of tooth loss, gum disease, and salivary gland inflammation, this inflammation, in turn, can cause inflammation in other areas of the body and damage the kidneys.

Gum disease, for example, may be harmful in healthy people, but can be devastating in those with kidney disease. Gum disease can not only cause chronic inflammation, but can spread bacteria throughout the body, especially when you're suffering from a serious illness like kidney disease that weakens your immune system.

Those with kidney disease also suffer from weak bones due to calcium imbalances. This can result in tooth loss, with teeth becoming loose and simply falling out.

If you suffer from kidney disease, it is essential to let your dentist know about this. At Joshua M. Ignatowicz DMD & Associates, Joshua M. Ignatowicz, DMD, DICOI and Dr. Gustavo Hernandez, DMD take chronic conditions like kidney disease extremely seriously and make sure that all treatments and procedures are in line with your ongoing treatment.

Kidney disease can impact oral health and dental procedures in many ways. Kidney disease patients who are on dialysis, for example, may be taking blood thinning medication. If this is not mentioned before a dental procedure, it can result in excessive bleeding. Additionally, because those with kidney disease are more susceptible to infections, they may be advised to take antibiotics before any dental procedures to minimize this risk.

If you suffer from kidney disease, make sure to brush your teeth with a soft-bristle brush twice a day, and floss daily. You are also advised to combat dry mouth with saliva substitutes, moisturizing mouthwashes, etc. To discuss dental care habits for those with kidney disease, make an appointment at Joshua M. Ignatowicz DMD & Associates by calling 725-257-2220. Joshua M. Ignatowicz, DMD, DICOI and Dr. Gustavo Hernandez, DMD will be happy to answer any and all questions regarding the subject.
