How to Reduce the Risk of Cardiovascular Issues from Poor Oral Health
Posted on 12/5/2022 by Joshua M. Ignatowicz DMD & Associates
If you have heart issues in your family tree, it is important to do all you can to reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease. Interestingly, there may be a link between poor oral health and cardiovascular issues. The most important thing you can do is to come to see us for your regular dental cleaning and exam. By doing so, we can identify dental issues before they become a big problem and affect the rest of your body, including your heart.
Steps You Can Take To Reduce Heart Issues May Start in Your Mouth
Could a healthy mouth be related to a healthy heart? Some researchers think so. In fact, they think that those patients with severe gum disease are at risk for cardiovascular issues. The reason behind this is that with gum disease, the bacteria present in your gums can circulate through your bloodstream and affect many parts of your body, including your heart and arteries. If that is the case, you need to understand how gum disease starts and what you can do to prevent it.
Understanding Gum Disease
Watch for signs of gum disease in your mouth. The symptoms include red, swollen, or bleeding gums. In addition, you may notice pus between your teeth and gums or brown spots along the gum line. If you have sores in your mouth, this may also be a sign of gum disease. Take notice if you have receding gums. Lastly, if you have loose teeth, you may have gum disease.
Schedule Your Dental Cleaning and Exam
The most important thing you can do is schedule your dental cleaning and exam. Make sure to brush your teeth regularly, at least twice a day. Floss your teeth once a day. Doing these things will help you to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
