How to Treat Teeth Sensitivity

How to Treat Teeth SensitivityA painful sensation in your teeth when you eat or drink hot or cold substances can be a sign of teeth sensitivity. Teeth sensitivity can occur due to various reasons, such as tooth decay or enamel loss. Luckily, there are effective ways to treat teeth sensitivity. Depending on the cause of teeth sensitivity, the dentist may suggest treatment approaches such as the ones below.

Fluoride Application

Weak enamel is a major concern for many people. It can occur due to poor oral hygiene or consuming too much sugar or acid. When your enamel is weak, it may not give maximum protection to the inner parts of your teeth, causing sensitivity. In this case, the dentist may apply a fluoride varnish on the surface of your teeth to strengthen the enamel and conceal the exposed dentine.

Root Canal Treatment

One of the major causes of tooth sensitivity is tooth decay. Cavities can damage your nerve tissues, causing sensitivity. When the teeth' nerve tissues cause infection and inflammation, a root canal may be an effective treatment. During this procedure, the dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans, and seals the area to prevent bacteria from entering.

A Mouth Guard/Night Guard

Bruxism/teeth grinding is another cause of teeth sensitivity. When you grind your teeth when sleeping or during high-impact activities, you'll likely destroy the teeth' enamel, resulting in teeth sensitivity. A dentist may provide a customized mouth guard/night guard to prevent teeth grinding, which will, in turn, reduce enamel damage and teeth sensitivity.

Gum Graft

Gum recession can also lead to sensitive teeth. It can occur due to factors such as genetics, alcohol, and aggressive brushing. When the gum tissues pull away, the roots of the teeth will be exposed, causing teeth sensitivity. The dentist may recommend a surgical gum graft to rebuild the gum and protect the exposed roots. Our professionals will help you know the cause of your tooth sensitivity.
