Protecting Your Oral Health
The mouth is the gateway to other systems in your body, so taking care of your oral health is about much more than making your smile look great. Regular dental checkups are a part of preventing the spread of many diseases of the oral cavity that can cause pain in the mouth as well as potentially spread to other areas of the body.
Common Types of Diseases of the Oral Cavity
Some of the most common forms of oral diseases include cavities, gum disease, cancer of the mouth, oral infectious diseases, traumatic injuries to the mouth and teeth, and lesions. Some of these common diseases of the oral cavity are present in nearly every adult in varying degrees, such as dental cavities. Many of these conditions are a result of years of unhealthy habits, such as irregular brushing, an unhealthy diet, excessive use of alcohol or drugs, poor general oral hygiene and tobacco use.
Preventing and Treating Diseases of the Oral Cavity
Proper oral hygiene plays a major role in keeping the most common forms of oral diseases at bay. Part of this is having regularly scheduled appointments for dental cleanings. If you experience any pain in your mouth, you should not ignore it. This could be the first sign of an infection in your mouth that requires treatment from a dentist to prevent the spread of infection.
