Non-Surgical Treatments

When you have a toothache or another problem, your dentist may be able to treat the issue without you needing oral surgery. Nonsurgical treatments use no or minimal anesthesia, which means that you can drive yourself to and from the appointment. These treatments can help to resolve common dental problems such as cavities, gum disease, and oral your teeth.

Dental Fillings

If you have a cavity, your dentist may be able to place a filling to restore the natural structure of your tooth. Amalgam fillings have been used for many years and consist of a mixture of silver, mercury, and other materials. Gold alloy fillings can also be used. If you need a filling on a front tooth, composite resin or glass isomer may be an option.

Root Scaling

Scaling is a procedure performed with small dental instruments. The dental tools are used to remove plaque and tartar from the visible parts of your teeth. Special attention is paid to the areas adjacent to your gum tissue. Root scaling is often performed to treat the early stages of gum disease. With root scaling, the dentist may be able to prevent gingivitis from developing into periodontitis.

Root Planing

If you do develop periodontitis, root planing is a way to remove the bacteria that are causing the inflammation. The dentist uses small instruments to clean the surface of your tooth roots. The instruments smooth out the rough spots where bacteria congregate. The tools also remove the bacterial plaques. After a root scaling treatment, you may notice less inflammation, reduced bleeding and tenderness, and a return to the normal pinkish color of your gum tissue.
